Dog Treats and Canine Health Conditions

Canine health is often high on pet owner's list of priorities, and this shows in the dog treats they choose. There are many manufacturers who enrich their products with various ingredients that are intended to promote good health, even when a condition exists. Rather than settle for the first biscuits you find, do a little research and find a treat that is ideal for your pet's health.

Arthritis and Joint Health

Sadly, arthritis is a common problem in many older canines. This can come about due to a number of factors, one of the most well known being obesity. Stress put on the joints over years will take it's toll, and the result will be painful mobility during your pet's golden years. Thankfully, there are a few companies who have created products that help alleviate the pain. It is important to note that dog treats are not a cure nor should they replace prescriptions or veterinary advice. However, they can help your pet live more comfortably.

For example, Nutri-Dog has made a uniquely shaped biscuit that is intended to promote good joint and hip health. These are made gluten-free and completely digestible. They also contain glucosamine which is known to encourage stronger, healthier joints in canines. The Nutri-Dog treats come in different sizes to accommodate various breeds. Treatco makes another similar product in its line of chicken filets. The hip and joint version includes glucosamine as well as chondroitin sulfate, which also assists with cartilage repair in the joints.

Canine Obesity

Maintaining a healthy weight is extremely important in canines, and many owners assume dog treats would counter act a good diet. There are treats available that can actually assist with canine weight loss, by offering a supplement of other necessary vitamins. Products such as Treatco's chicken filets with vitamins and minerals, provide pets with additional sources of vitamins E, B-12, A, and D. These will keep your pet energized and healthy even while working on weight reduction.

Allergies in Dogs

Another common health problem found in canines is allergies. Many dogs suffer from wheat allergies, which can pose a serious problem considering how many dog treats and foods contain wheat ingredients. Dogs with wheat allergies may show a number of symptoms, including itchiness, swelling of the ear, diarrhea, and frequent sneezing. More severe symptoms may be displayed depending on the intensity of the allergy. These include behavior changes and seizures.

Many dog treats are now made with wheat-free recipes. This allows dogs to enjoy their snacks without the allergic reaction. Some are even dual-purpose, such as the Bone-a-Mint treat made by N-Bone. These are wheat-free and also encourage fresher breath with a recipe that includes parsley, peppermint, and fennel.

Evaluate your Pet

Before settling on a specific brand of dog treats, make sure you know what is out there for your pet. Consider existing health conditions and potential high-risk problems that could arise later in life. By offering healthy snacks that work with your pet's body, you can help prevent or slow the onset of health problems.

How a Cosmetic Dentist Identifies TMJ Dysfunction and Possible Treatments

The Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is located where your bottom jaw meets up with your skull. Layers of cartilage between the two sides cushion strain and keep it moving easily while muscles support its movement. When the bone, muscle, or cartilage suffers harm or damaged movement and abnormalities, this dysfunction causes pain, discomfort, and the wearing of teeth on one or both sides.

Signs Of TMJ

A cosmetic dentist sees the signs of Temporo-Mandibular joint dysfunction frequently. Patients complain about having headaches, ear pain, and discomfort without finding any relief. In many situations, the sufferer will find their ear is sensitive to wind. Their hearing quality can also decrease leaving the person with reduced hearing, fuzziness, echoing, and even balance problems.

Pain can move into the temple, jaw, neck, and even across the cheek or forehead. This pain is often a sudden, sharp pain that behaves very similar to a Charlie horse. It often accompanies 'noisy jaw' that sounds like clicking and popping. In many cases, the jaw will lock up and become difficult to yawn, chew, and sleep on the afflicted side of the face. In extreme cases, the cosmetic dentist may notice the jaw shifts or slides while moving the bone.

Causes Of Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction

This dysfunction is often caused by repeated strain on the joint. This could be from opening the joint too far, the repeated sliding of the jaw, or even trauma. Contributing factors to this problem include poor dental health and teeth grinding that leave the surfaces of your teeth with an uneven surface. Eating habits such as the size of the pieces placed into the mouth, chewing nails, and habitual gum chewing all add to the condition. In some cases, it is nothing more than a natural misalignment of the bone.

Treatments

The treatments a cosmetic dentist recommends most often for TMJ focus on prevention and at home treatments. This can include behavior modification, relaxation and stress-reduction techniques. Over-the counter medications such as acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory, and muscle relaxants can also help to alleviate the symptoms. Alternating hot and cold compresses on the affected joint can also help significantly. The general emphasis is on prevention and natural treatments rather than in-depth medical procedures.

The cosmetic dentist may have to resort to more involved procedures and treatments for more stubborn cases. Medications such as Tricyclic antidepressant medications can help patients deal with the pain and discomfort. An occlusal splint can also be set into place to hold the joint in the correct position and prevent further damage to the teeth and joint.

In extreme cases, TMJ will require the expertise of a variety of health care providers. Surgery may be used to correct the joint. Relaxation techniques, physiotherapy, and general exercise will help strengthen the muscles in the area to support and hold the joint into position.

It doesn't matter if you are a young student in Ohio or an adult from Laguna Niguel TMJ is an uncomfortable, painful, and frustrating condition affecting a large portion of the population. With a knowledgeable cosmetic dentist, you can get effective treatments so you can worry less and enjoy life.

Christine O'Kelly is an author for the Laguna Niguel TMJ experts at Aesthetic Dental Designs. This Laguna Niguel cosmetic dentist group specializes in a number of dental procedures including TMJ treatments, veneers, implants, bonding, and full mouth reconstruction among others.

Optimize Health Naturally Through Chiropractic

Many people have heard about chiropractic but for those who have not yet experienced it, chiropractic may remain an elusive or misunderstood profession. Here is your opportunity to have things cleared up...

Chiropractic offers a natural, non-invasive and very safe alternative for the management of various musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Whereas many treatment options provide symptomatic relief, one great thing about chiropractic is that it can often correct the source of a problem. In addition, chiropractors often have the ability to detect and treat mechanical problems before they become symptomatic. Chiropractors are back specialists. They primarily analyze the spine for aberrant joint mechanics, alignment and posture and help to correct these mechanical problems through spinal adjustments, mobilizations and by prescribing specific, corrective exercises. Through chiropractic care, back pain and joint stiffness are reduced and overall health and healing are optimized by balancing the nervous system. Many patients find chiropractic refreshing in that chiropractors often take the time to listen carefully and do a thorough analysis to truly understand one's unique health picture.

What few people may realize is that chiropractic education is very extensive. These days, Canadian Chiropractors are required to have a minimum of seven years of postsecondary education and upon graduating are doctors. Following graduation, Canadian chiropractors must also take continuing education courses to ensure that they remain current in research and skills. Most chiropractors practising in Canada receive their education from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractor College which provides a rigorous and comprehensive program of study. This is where future chiropractors learn extensively about anatomy, biomechanics, orthopaedics, diagnosis, nutrition and many other courses which are relevant in recognizing need for care beyond the chiropractic scope of practice. It is also where chiropractors begin to develop their technique skills.

Central to chiropractic philosophy is the realization that the body truly has a remarkable ability to heal itself. To chiropractors, this vital force is understood as innate intelligence. Chiropractic is also about helping patients achieve their optimal state of wellness. Good health is not merely the absence of disease or symptoms. A lot of health problems in present day society are a direct result of poor lifestyle choices and there is a process that leads up to their development. Good health is about reaching an optimal state of physical, psychological and social well-being and it's about being proactive. Chiropractors empower patients to take an active role in their health and guide patients in the necessary steps to achieve this. Some of these steps include regular physical activity, good nutrition, adequate rest, a healthy attitude and chiropractic care.

So what is a chiropractic adjustment? An adjustment is a high velocity, low force thrust that is applied specifically to hypomobile ("stuck") or misaligned vertebrae. The adjustment may or may not create an audible sound as a result of rapidly stretching the joint capsule and the pressure/volume changes that occur.

When a joint is hypomobile, the joints above and below move more to compensate, so that global range of motion is unaffected. This leads to excessive/uneven wear and early degeneration of the segments above and below. The chiropractic adjustment is intended to restore normal motion to the restricted joint thereby gapping the joint, lubricating it and slowing down the degenerative process. In general, movement is beneficial and supports and helps to heal joint cartilage. As cartilage is a living structure and has no blood supply, all nutrients that support it are derived from the surrounding joint fluid. When movement is restricted, metabolic waste products are not removed and the necessary nutrients are not flushed through. The adjustment corrects this and also stretches and relaxes surrounding muscles.

As for the misaligned vertebra, according to chiropractic philosophy, applying an adjustment here restores hindrance in neurological transmission, balances the nervous system and enhances one's natural healing capacity. Here is a brief anatomy lesson to explain: The brain is the computer that controls the human body. An extension of the brain is the spinal cord and an extension of the spinal cord are spinal nerves which come out on either side of the spine at every vertebral level. These spinal nerves send messages to all the muscles, organs and tissues of the body. If a misaligned vertebra pinches one of these nerves, the proper functioning of any structure in direct communication may be affected. Hence, if a chiropractic adjustment corrects misaligned vertebrae then function may be restored.

There is a growing body of scientific evidence in support of chiropractic treatment for problems of musculoskeletal origin which create symptoms such as neck pain, back pain, joint pain, headaches, and others. There are also many anecdotal reports that support chiropractic treatment for improvement of non-musculoskeletal problems such as asthma, ear infections, ADHD, infantile colic and many others.

Chiropractors also prescribe specific, corrective exercises. These are intended to correct faulty posture and muscle imbalance. Stretching exercises help correct tight muscles that can restrict range of motion. Strengthening exercises help return strength to weaker muscles. It is the combined effort between the chiropractor and the patient that ultimately restores normal function. Chiropractors are partners of health. Just as chiropractors must do their job, patients must do their homework to achieve maximum results.

Now, there are different types of chiropractors out there. Some chiropractors have different practice styles, target populations and perspectives about the profession philosophically. There are family wellness chiropractors who see a broad range of patients of all ages. There are sports chiropractors who focus on athletic populations. There are rehab chiropractors who help injured people recover from accidents. Some chiropractors may use modalities such as electrical stimulation, laser therapy or acupuncture. Some use soft-tissue techniques and some use different adjusting techniques. Regardless of the particular technique used or modality provided, the ultimate goal is the same: to get patients back on their feet, doing the things they love and keeping them well. When looking for a chiropractor, do your research to find one who will best be able to meet your needs as a patient.

All too often, patients visit a chiropractor as a last resort and are pleasantly surprised at how well their health is managed through chiropractic. Next time, make chiropractic your first resort!

Pilates Anatomy Principles

One operating belief of the Pilates exercise system is that you cannot have perfect health if your body is out of alignment, as reflected by poor posture. This tends to impede the function of your inner organs by squashing them together, and reducing your breathing which reduces your supply of oxygen and restricts circulation of your blood, again denying your organs the oxygen they need to function well.

The first component is your skeletal system. The key sections are the spine, shoulder girdle and pelvis. Pilates helps bring them into their natural, functional alignment. It also helps keep your joints mobilized. It also helps to increase bone density, reducing your risk of osteoporosis, which helps to reduce your chances of breaking a bone even if you did fall.

Your spine is made up of separate bones -- thirty-four of them -- called vertebrae. They form a column through which goes your spinal cord, your body's main branch of the nervous system, essential for communication between your body and your brain.

The vertebrae are separated by disks of cartilage, and held together by ligaments. This structure is solid, but not stiff -- or shouldn't be. The spinal column tends to feel straight, but it isn't. As an engineering design to better absorb shock, it contains four natural curves. When you stand up "straight," your spine should be in its natural position. That's not standing too stiff, to straighten the curves out, but also not exaggerating the curves by slouching down.

Where your arms join your shoulders, are three bones: the collar bone (clavicle), shoulder blade (scapula) and upper arm bone. Trying to pull our shoulders back too far can cause strain across the collar bone. Many of us sit slumped in front of computers, causing back strain. Also, we also carry habitual tension in our shoulders, which hunches them up toward our ears.

The lower spine joins the pelvis. This gets thrown out of whack by how we often stand with most of our weight on one foot or the other rather than evenly distributed, and through poor walking habits.

With good posture, all of our skeletal system remains in natural alignment. Although we're too used to slouching down, we can feel the difference.

Our muscles move us by contracting and relaxing, using the bones they're attached to as leverage. Therefore, our muscles must work in tandem. The muscles that are contracting must pull against something, and the opposing muscles must relax.

(If you've ever seen a stage hypnosis show where the subject was told they were too weak to pick up a pencil, but to try as hard as they good, and you could see them strain but they didn't pick up the pencil... you've seen a demonstration of how the opposing muscles can work against the contracting muscles to nullify movement.)

Muscles should be well-toned. Not tensed and overcontracted, but not too loose either. Pilates exercises aim to tone the muscles, and to do so in an even way. Many exercises overtrain one group of muscles while ignoring the opposing set of muscles, thus creating unbalanced strength and instability.

Medical Problems Of Golden Retrievers

Golden retrievers are generally healthy dogs, with strong and sound constitutions. They are extremely popular as family pets. However, there are some medical problems of Golden retrievers that all Golden owners should know. These are inherited by the golden retriever in its genes and are quite common. So, if you're planning to get yourself a golden retriever puppy, be sure to get a well-bred puppy from a reputed breeder. The truth is, that poor breeding of the golden retriever has tarnished its reputation without any fault of the breed. Here are some commonly found medical problems of Golden retrievers.

Hip Dyslapsia

In Golden retrievers this is a common problem, which occurs because of a malformed joint. It causes the better part of the femur to not be properly aligned with the cup of the hip socket. This is one of the medical problems of Golden retrievers, which can range from mild to relatively severe. It is not something to worry about, and with proper diet and exercise your dog will be able to lead a completely normal and active life. In extremely rare circumstances, surgical correction or euthanasia are required as a last resort.

Osteochondrosis Dissecans (OCD)

OCD is a bone formation disorder, which takes place due to a defect in the transition of cartilage into bone, while the dog is growing up. Research has shown this condition to be genetic and it appears more commonly in some lines of Golden retrievers than others. Environmental factors can also contribute to aggravating this problem.

Panosteitis

This medical problem of Golden retrievers affects them in their early age when they are 5 to 14 months old. Also referred to as wandering lameness, it causes sudden lameness in dogs.

Epilepsy

This too is a hereditary disorder, which causes seizures. There is no cure, but it can be controlled with medication. This medical problem of Golden retrievers allows them to lead a very normal life. But they should not be placed in very stressful situations, and most certainly should not be bred if they have epilepsy.

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).

(PRA), and central (PRA) are among the most common retina based problems found in Golden retrievers. Symptoms begin to manifest in dogs around the age of two and degenerative in nature. Sadly, this condition is also hereditary. So it is wise to make sure that both parents do not have this problem before you consider picking up a pup born to them.

Ear care

It's a good idea to continuously clean your dog's ears, as they are likely to pick up a lot of dust and dirt when they are out. This way they would not pick up any ear infections.

Juvenile cataracts

This particular medical problem of Golden retrievers is also hereditary and is also a fact you should look out for when looking to purchase a golden retriever pup.

Seborrhea

Primary sebhorrea is a medical problem of Golden retrievers, which gives them yellowish brownish scales, a greasy coat, and an irritable itchy skin with a foul smell. You can take your dog to your vet to get this problem treated, as it is not too serious.

Just buy a golden retriever from a reputed breeder and do some checks on the pup's mother and father - and you'll be fine! If your golden retriever develops a disease at an older age, don't worry. Just take it to the Vet. Lastly, keep your golden clean and take good care of it!
